FLO - Not My Job - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023

“I knew from the moment [we met] we were about to start something big.” That’s Jorja Douglas recalling her first connection with fellow FLO mates Stella Quaresma and Renée Downer. Seems like Jorja’s intuition was correct. Released last spring, FLO’s debut track “Cardboard Box'' immediately went crazy viral, and threw the 20-year-olds into the middle of the conversation about the current wave of nostalgic-leaning R&B. Comparisons to fellow UK girl groups Spice Girls and Sugababes arrived quickly. Debut EP ‘The Edge’ reinforces the trio’s commitment to the bedazzled fun of throwback pop-R&B. Check how the languid chimes that set the vibe for Ashanti and Usher at the turn of the millennium mark the punchy verses and harmonized choruses of FLO’s “Feature Me.” Indeed, one could easily be convinced that Missy Elliot and Darkchild lent the drum machine they used on Destiny Child’s ‘The Writing’s on the Wall’ to the trio’s producers for “Summertime.” As effortless as they make it seem, Stella, Renée and Jorja spent two years honing their craft before dropping any tracks. That timespan included finding the right teammates, such as “Cardboard Box” producer MNEK, who also has credits with Dua Lipa and Beyoncé. “We had so much fun arranging and recording our Vevo session earlier this year,” they said about their summer visit to our DSCVR studio. Things have changed in the months between: we’ve made a gorgeous upgrade to our space, and FLO has more songs out and ready to perform, like the harmony-tastic "Not My Job." This girl group’s vision is strong, and just like Jorja, we have a really good feeling about it.

The last time we worked with keshi was in 2020 for our DSCVR At Home series, which brought live performances to the masses during lockdown. Back then, supporting his hushed ballad “More,” we hinted that an album was in the works. Next week it finally arrives. The versatile singer/rapper/producer asserts that ‘Gabriel’ is about his “life at the moment; it’s very honest and candid.” That latter word certainly describes “GET IT,” a boldly bumpin’ and lyrically brash track that announces keshi is yet again pushing the boundaries of his craft. As he goes through his checklist - “Got my money (Check) / Lady (Check) / Rollie (Check) / Mary (Check)” - it’s easy to see this is an artist whose confidence is sky high. He brought that authority to our studio, too, reeling in the swag a bit and adding a pinch of earnestness. Meanwhile, on “ANGOSTURA,” he dove even deeper into his R&B bag. Mr. Versatile strikes again.

The music on Lorde's 'Melodrama' reflects the wealth of emotions the New Zealand native has experienced of late, and they’re rendered with the kind of poise we’ve come to expect from the pop superstar. Her voice, the melodies, the arrangements she’s chosen to help landscape her feelings - this critically-acclaimed second album is particularly fetching because the 20-year-old singer trusts her idiosyncrasies to fuel her eloquence. “Let’s let things come out of the woodwork,” she coos on “Homemade Dynamite.” That’s what makes the six performances of ‘VEVO X Lorde’ so powerful as well. Tate McRae - hurt my feelings (Live) | Vevo Extended Play

It's a thrill to watch an artist blossom, to see them fulfill the dream of becoming an adventurous creative whose work impacts a deeply devoted audience. That's why we're tickled to continue our work with Tate McRae. Four years ago we invited the then teen to our DSCVR program, where she delivered engaging performances of "feel like shit" and "happy face." A couple years later she was back for a heart-rending piano-and-voice version of "she's all i wanna be," whose intimacy bordered on frightening. Along the way her articulation grew, her perspectives broadened, and the feels she put front and center became more powerful. YouTube channel, TikTok feed, the eloquence of each track on 'i used to think i could fly' - they all nudged her forward and deepened her relationship with her ever-grown cadre of fans. When 'THINK LATER' hit at the end of '23, it was obviously time to capture McRae in action again. Our Extended Play team worked with Tate to craft performances in settings that enhance her music and amplify her vision. The Calgary native is now an LA local, and "exes" unfolds in a shadowy SoCal bedroom where memories stand in the corners and the roller coaster of romance provides thrills both wanted and unwanted. It's the first of our Extended Play performances, so stay close - more are on their way, and each is set to have Tate share herself even further.

For a singer, being able to set a mood is like being able to cast a spell. Time and again Ariana Grande has proven she's one of those vocalists who can architect an aura, and this performance of "safety net" is a great example of the way she controls the emotional climate of a song. The lyrics describe the feeling of being lost in love - a little bit over your head in a new relationship. By inviting Ty Dolla $ign along for a very smooth exchange of lines, Ari takes on an arranger's duties. She knows exactly how she wants this one to sound. "safety net" is from 'Positions,' of course. Like our previous Official Live Performance of "pov," it puts her voice right up front, exactly where it should be. Deftly designing the use of swoops and trills, she again shows us her mastery of modern pop. Stay tuned, more coming.

Cannons are vibemasters. From the release of 2017’s aptly-named ‘Night Drive’ EP to this year’s alluring ‘Fever Dream' debut, the LA trio has steadily expanded their electro-pop dreamworld. With her glittering outfits, shimmering blonde locks, and reverb-drenched whisper, frontwoman Michelle Joy uses siren skills to woo listeners. Her accomplices, longtime pals Ryan Clapham and Paul Davis, keep listeners in place with an array of spells - ethereal synths, crispy percussion, psychedelic guitars. Harry Styles was among the millions hypnotized by “Fire For You,” which went Gold earlier this year. Ostensibly their breakout track, it was actually part of 2019’s ‘Shadows’ EP. As its popularity grew through the lockdown era, Cannons’ impact did too; fans delved into the group’s deep discography of similarly vibey jams. Now the trio is getting a chance to conjure their magic on stage. Michelle loves seeing fans come out in “Cannons clothes” - anything that’s shiny, sparkly, feathery, or retro. We were certainly under their spell after their studio visit. When “Hurricane” and “Bad Dream” pull you into their world, you won’t want to leave.

Limitless imagination is a defining characteristic of great musicians - J Balvin proves that. The Colombian superstar’s passion for creativity explodes past mere music-making, and heads into the realms of visual aesthetics, fashion and pop culture. In the last decade, the Medellin native has helped turn his city, and Latin America in general, into the coolest place to be in pop music. He wears Pikachu hoodies with not-even-dropped-yet Yeezys while riding the tops of charts from Canada to Chile. And from Pharrell to Bad Bunny to Colin Tilley, the urbano/reggaeton hero works with the only best. Naturally, we wanted to collaborate with him. When our teams joined forces in Miami to capture these performances, Balvin’s iridescent ideas flowed like the Magdalena. Taking inspiration from ‘Colores,’ the teams worked with Rio-based Penique Productions to turn the interior of a mansion into a vibrant representation of each song’s hue. “Azul” is the color of the blue sea, a symbol of Colombia's coast. 2018 was a big year for Pablo, Josh, Stell, Ken, and Justin. It's when they first united into a great music experiment, uniting as SB19, and making major ripples in the world of Pinoy pop. The Philippines has a wealth of talented artists, but with each passing years the guys have made their way forward, becoming more and more successful in their region and, now, globally. Because of Korea's proximity, Pinoy pop has cast a long shadow on musicians and singers in the Philippines. The SB19 squad have a good grip on all the elements that inform their path and comprise their particular sound. Check previous hits such as "MAPA" and new pieces like "GENTO" (from last summer's 'PAGTATAG!' EP) for a look at well-crafted earworms as well as sleek harmonies. They performed the latter and "I WANT YOU" in our studio. And they made a LOT of heads turn doing so.
